Tan’s Transatlantic Travel Tips
Getting to Bali, Indonesia
The city is served by Ngurah Rai International Airport, popularly known as the Denpasar International Airport. It is the third busiest and the best airport in Indonesia. Many international airlines serve this airport, such as Emirates, Dragonair, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, to name a few. There are many domestic airlines within Asia which will connect you to and from Bali.
The most popular and common place people stop before getting to Bali is Singapore, since there are a dozen “budget-carriers” that fly more than 2 dozen times a day back and forth to Bali (just a short 1.5 hr flight from Singapore). No frills, but also extremely inexpensive (think less than $100 for the flight, round trip).
We recommend you use Singapore as your pit-stop to connect to Bali.
Emirates
Best for those coming from the Boston area
Emirates leaves from Boston to Dubai every night of the week, and from Dubai there are a ton of flights onwards to Singapore (and some even to Bali directly).
Emirates is one of the nicest airlines in the world, and I would go so far as to compare the economy class of Emirates to be nicer and more comfortable than business class in any US-based airline.
Flights for Feb 27 to March 4 were around $1015 for economy and about $1600 for premium economy (their newest plane) when we checked yesterday which is the lowest it will be (or that I have seen in my 8+ years flying this exact route).
Singapore Airlines
Best for those coming from the New York / New Jersey areas
Singapore Airlines has been rated the number 1 or amongst the top 3 airlines in the world many times, and is the only airline that claims the World’s Longest Flight title.
Singapore Airlines pricing for the Feb 27 - March 4 dates was just $972 as of yesterday, which is INSANELY cheap considering that there is NO economy class, just premium economy for this nonstop flight.
Yes it’s long (18 hours) but the benefit is that you can move about this big plane easily, and you don’t have to deal with layovers or anything.
